PGA Merchandise Show 2015

My custom fitting studio in North Berwick, Scotland will be closed for the next seven days and re-opens on the 26th January. I can take email bookings for that week but you might struggle to get me on my cell phone.

I am away widening my knowledge of this seasons golf technology at the annual PGA Merchandise show in Orlando, Florida. This show is everything golf, great new ideas as well as plenty of terrible ideas.

For me this is golf mecca. If I discover something to add to my studio line up it can be amazing. This is the second time I will be visiting, two years ago I became a SeeMore Spi putting coach.  For those that aren’t aware of SeeMore putters look through my posts to find out more.  SeeMore changed the way I putt and in turn I have changed the way my customers putt.

This year I am excited to see some new brands. The newest brand and I think the best kept secret as far as spy photos go is that Hogan golf are re launching a line of clubs. Back story, I have been fitting Scor wedges for the past 2 years, again they came on my radar at the show. Terry Kohler the man behind Scor wedges is leading the team that will re-launch Hogan.  I expect the Scor wedge line up to be simply rebranded as Hogan but have read that the new Hogan iron will also feature the “V” sole which is part of what makes Scor so great to use.

I have a meeting with a new shaft company also.  Veylix shafts have been created by some of the guys that developed the Matrix series of shafts.  Some of the early reports I have read say these shafts use extremely high modulus graphite, which in turn make a very predictable shaft and stable shaft.   Along with Veylix I look forward to spending time with my friends at Accra shafts.  Accra are launching new iron shafts, new fairway shafts and I think there will be another secret unveiled at the show also.

KBS launch their new wedge shaft. They have 2 new models but the one that interests me the most is their new low launching wedge shaft that I think will be amazing for Scottish links golf.

I will be meeting with Jones Golf bags. Jones make the best retro styled bags out there in my opinion and I have been distributing them in the UK for the last few months.  I can’t wait to see their fully water-proof bag as I think it could be a great seller for the UK market.

I will be taking plenty of photos and sharing them every day via facebook and twitter.

Remember, my knowledge of golf equipment makes my fittings better and when you get a better fitting you get a better game too.

Planning for a great 2015

Happy New Year to you.

I am not going to do the same as everyone else and ask about resolutions for the new golf season as for most golfers that answer will be “shoot lower scores” so instead I am going to ask how was your first round of 2015 if you have played it yet?  For me 2015 opened with a couple of 1 putt pars and on a day where the wind and rain showers played  a major role I finished pretty near my handicap.

January 21st-23rd sees the PGA Merchandise show in Orlando open.  This show for a gear head like me is Mecca.  Every manufacturer that counts is there and they all have new shinny equipment that is always better than everything ever made before 😉

The first day of the show is “Demo Day”  This is where I get to try every piece of equipment on a circular outdoor range hitting real ball from turf.  I tend to not focus on the Major OEMs at demo day as the ques to hit the latest longest driver from TaylorMade or Nike etc can be very long.  I tend to search out the more interesting brands, test shafts, look at swing aids and gadgets and make a list of some of the products that I want to see in the exhibition hall in the following days.

I promise I will be taking hundreds of photos of anything I think is interesting or bizarre and hopefully a few selfies as there tends to be a few famous names promoting their sponsors latest products.

The Monday prior to the show I will spend the day with a 100 of the worlds best club fitters.  We are all brought together by Accra Golf shafts to discuss our industry, share ideas and generally talk about our fitting experiences over the past year.

These days are a bit of a pat on the back for us custom fitters and  club builders but the discussions that take place there tend to arise from our fitting experiences in the past season.  For me, my style of fitting has had to adapt with the move to Scotland’s golf coast where players prefer to see lower ball flight even if it is at the sacrifice of ultimate launch monitor distance.  I have asked my shaft suppliers for lower launching light weight iron shafts, a combination that doesn’t normally go hand in hand and believe that I should have a product to offer my customers early February.  Another product that I am looking forward to is a low launching wedge shaft, I can’t claim it as my idea but will again have an offering coming in in February.

Feel free to send any questions you might have about equipment you would like me to hunt out and follow my facebook and twitter account to see daily updates from the show.
